Question from Tammie:

What is the formula to calculate the following:

I have a plate of steel that is 1/4" x 48" x 192" at a price of $15.23 per square foot
What is the formula to calculate the cost if I only use 1/4" x 47-1/4" x 68-1/8" of that steel plate?

Hi Tammie,

The cost is per square foot so you need to convert the measurements to feet. There are 12 inches in a foot so you need a piece that is 47.25/12 feet by 68.125/12 feet. That is

(47.25/12) × (68.125/12) = 22.3535 square feet.

At $15.23 per square foot that will cost

22.3535 × $15.23 = $340.44.
