calea, a student:

i really dont now what two-step equation means?

Hi Calea,

A two-step equation simply means how many operations you need to perform before you have your solution. A one step equation would be like

x + 5 =7
x+5-5=7-5 ⇒ subtraction on both sides
x=2

or

2x=6
(2x)/2 = 6/2 ⇒ division on both sides
x=3

An example of a two step equation would be
3x-4=11
3x-4+4=11+4 ⇒ addition on both sides
3x=15
(3x)/3 = 15/3 ⇒ division on both sides
x=5
Since 3x-4=11 requires addition and division to solve that makes it a two step equation.

Hope this helps,

Janice
