olivia:

solve for x
(3x-1)/4 + (x+3)/6 = 3

Hi Olivia,

The easiest way to approach this equation is by getting rid of the fractions. We have two different denominators 4 and 6 so the lowest common multiple is 12. Now multiple every thing by 12

12(3x-1)/4 + 12(x+3)/6 = 12(3) since 12/4=3 and 12/6=2 and 12x3=36 we get

3(3x-1) + 2(x+3) = 36

or

9x-3+2x+6=36

Now you can can collect like terms and solve for x.
