the distance from the bottom of the ladder to the building is18 foot less than the length of the ladder.How high up the building is the top of the ladder if that distance is 1 ft less than the length of the ladder?

The length of the ladder is L feet. What is the horizontal distance from the base of the ladder to the wall? What is the vertical distance from the top of the ladder to the ground? Write down Pythagoras theorem for the right triangle you see. Solve for L.
