Question from Andrew, a student:

A dealer wishes to produce 300 gallons of oil worth 40cents a quart. He has oil worth 36cents a quart and oil worth 52cents a quart. How many quarts of each should he mix?

Andrew,

There are 4 quarts in a gallon so 300 gallons s 1200 quarts.

Suppose he uses x quarts of the oil that is worth 36 cent per quart. What is its value?

To make 1200 quarts he must then use 1200 - x quarts of the oil that is worth 52 cent per quart. What is its value?

What is the total value of the oil in his mixture? What is the value per quart? This must be 40 cents. Solve for x.
