Question from Anisa, a student:

There are 30 students in a class. A quarter of the boys and half of the girls study music, making a total of 11 music students. How many girls are there in the class?

Anisa,

Suppose that the number of boys in the class is b and the number of girls is g. You are told that

b + g = 30.

How many boys study music? How many girls study music? The sum is 11 so this gives you a second equation in b and g. Solve for g and b.

If you have difficulty completing this write back and tell us where you are stuck.
