Question from Bob, a student:

If you were to place 1 cubic yard of top soil onto a 15' X 24' Garden area and it was spread evenly would the amount be a dusting of 1" or about 1'?

Hi Bob,

There are 3 feet in a yard is 15 feet is 15/3 = 5 yards. Likewise 24 feet is 8 yards. Hence the area of the garden is 5 × 8 = 40 square yards.

To cover the garden to a depth of 1 yard would take 40 × 1 = 40 cubic yards. That's way too much.

To cover the the garden to a depth of 1 foot which is 1/3 yards would take 40 × 1/3 = 13.33 cubic yards. Still to much.

How much top soil is needed to cover the garden to a depth of 1 inch? Remember there are 36 inches in a yard.
