Question from Carla, a student:

A football field is 120 yd long and 50 yd wide. What is the area of the football field, in square meters?

Hi Carla,

The only conversion number that I remember for converting lengths between the American system and the metric system is that 2.54 centimeters is 1 inch.

I would start by converting the yards measurements to meters. There are 36 inches in a yard so 120 yards is 120 × 36 inches. Each inch is 2.45 centimeters so 120 yards is 120 × 36 × 2.54 centimeters. There are 100 centimeters in a meter so 120 yards is 120 × 36 × 2.54/100 meters.

In a similar fashion convert the width to meters. The area in square meters is then he length in meters times the width in meters.
