Question from Darrell, a student:

In digging a pipe trench that measures 29 feet long, 2 feet 9 inches wide, and 3 feet 6
inches deep, how many cubic yards of earth were removed from the site?

Darrell,

Since you want the result in cubic yards I would first convert all the measurements to yards.

29 feet = 29/3 yards
2 feet + 9 inches = 2 + 9/12 feet = 2.75 feet = 2.75/3 yards
3 feet + 6 inches = 3.5 feet = 3.5/3 yards.

The volume in cubic yards is then the length times the width times the depth.

You can check your calculation using our volume calculator.
