Question from edy, a student:

6 courses have an average of 100 in the first semester
5 courses have an average of 90 in the second semester
what is the average of the two semester , method of calculation , how come to have 95.4545

Hi Edy,

If the grades in 6 courses in the first semester had an average of 100 then this was calculated by

(sum of the scores on the 6 courses in the first semester)/6 = 100

Thus the sum of the scores on the 6 courses in the first semester was 6 × 100 = 600.

If the grades in 5 courses in the second semester had an average of 90 then what was the sum of the scores on the 5 courses in the first semester?

What was the sum of the grades in the 11 courses over both semesters? What is their average?

Penny
