Question from Leah, a student:

When should you use factorials?

Leah,

Factorials are used in lots of places!

  • counting the ways to arrange things
  • finding "Poisson" probabilities connected with rare events
  • finding power series to approximate functions
  • computing binomial coefficients, which are used for:
  • finding binomial expansions
  • finding the number of ways to choose N things out of M
  • finding various probabilities connected with sampling

Good Hunting!
