Question from Lynda, a parent:

4x +3/4 = 1/4

I know the answer is -1/8 but I don't know how to show the process of getting the answer

Hi Lynda,

The first thing I would do is to multiply both sides by a number that will result in removing the fractions. In this example multiplying both sides by 4 will accomplish what I want.

4 × (4x + 3/4) = 4 × 1/4 so
4 × 4x + 4 × 3/4 = 1 and thus
16 x + 3 = 1.

To eliminate the 3 from the left side add -3 to each side to get

16 x + 3 - 3 = 1 - 3 and hence
16x = -2.

Finally multiply both sides by 1/16 to get

1/16 × 16x = 1/16 × (-2) so finally
x = -2/16 = -1/8.

I hope this helps,
Penny
