Question from Nazrul, a teacher:

5% of total number of fruits of a fruit seller has been rotten and also 5% of them has been damaged during transportation. What is the percentage profit by which he sells the rest so that he profit 20% as a whole?

Please show me the process of finding the result in details. Thank you for helping me.

Hi Nazrul,

Suppose the value of the undamaged fruit is $x. We know that 5% are rotten and 5% are damaged so only 90% of his items can be sold and hence the value of the items he can sell is 0.90 × $x. He wants his profit to be 20% of the value of the undamaged fruit which is 0.20 × $x. By what factor does he need to multiply 0.90 × $x to obtain 0.20 × $x?
