Question from Nicole, a student:

You head downstream on a river in a canoe. You can paddle at 6 km/h and the river is flowing at 2.4 km/h. How far downstream will you be in 55 minutes?

Hi Nicole,

There are two forces carrying you downstream. One is the force of the current which carries you at 2.4 km/hr and the second is the force of you paddling which carries you at 6 km/hr. Together they carry you at 2.4 + 6 = 8.4 km/hr. Thus in one hour you go 8.4 km. There are 60 minutes in an hour. How far do you go in a minute? How far do you go in 55 minutes?
