Question from patty, a parent:

Example,
If 2 is to 55, then 6 is to ? How do I begin to figure this out, is is an algebra formula?

Patty,

If the ratio of 2 to 55 is to be the same as the ratio of 6 to x then you can say it symbolically as a ratio

2:55 = 6:x

or as a fraction

2/55 = 6/x

and solve for x.

You can also solve this without resorting to algebraic notation. If they are in the same ratio then, since 6 is 3 × 2, it must be that 6 is to 3 × 55.
