Question from Renay, a student:

What is the correct way to figure a percentage like 23 correct out of 28?

Hi Renay,

23 out of 28 is pretty good. To express it as a percentage you want an equivalent fraction to 23/28, but with a denominator of 100. (Per cent means per one hundred.) Thus you want x when

23/28 = x/100.

Hence

x = 100 × 23/28 = 82.1.

Thus your grade can be expressed as 82.1%.
