Question from RHONDA, a parent:

In an 18 x 33 ft area how much is 4 yards of sand in inches to cover this area.

Hi Rhonda,

18 feet is 18/3 = 6 yards and 33 feet is 33/3 = 11 yards. Thus the surface area is 6 × 11 = 66 square yards. If the thickness of the cover is T yards then the volume is 66 × T cubic yards. But the volume is 4 cubic yards so

66 × T = 4

and hence

T = 4/66 = 0.0606 yards.

There are 36 inches in a yard so 0.0606 yards is 0.0606 × 36 = 2.2 inches which is approximately 2 3/16 inches.
