Question from Serena:

Two fishing boats set out at 2pm for some afternoon fishing. Both boats pulled out from the same dock heading in the same direction. The average speed of the blue boat is 30mph slower then twice the speed of the red boat. In two hours, the blue boat is 20 miles ahead of the red boat. Find the rate of the blue boat.

Serena,

Suppose the speed of the red boat is R mph. How far did the red boat go in 2 hours?

What is twice the speed of the red boat? What is 30 mph slower than twice the speed of the red boat? This is the speed of the blue boat. How far did the blur boat go in 2 hours? This is 20 miles more than the distance the red boat travelled. Solve for R.

Penny
