Question from Sharon, a student:

the product of 2 consecutive integers is -6 less than the square of the larger number.
find the smaller number

Hi Sharon,

Let the smaller of the two integers be n. Since the integers are consecutive the larger is n + 1.

  1. What is the product of the two integers?

  2. What is the square of the larger integer?

  3. What is 6 less than the square of the larger integer?

The answers to question 1 and 3 are equal. Solve for n.

Penny
