Question from Adori, a student:

Two boats leave the port of San Francisco traveling in opposite directions at the same time. One boat travels 8 knots per hour faster than
the other. After one day's travel they are 1920 nautical miles apart. What are the speeds of the boats?

Adori,

Suppose the slow boat travels at k knots (nautical miles per hour). How far does it travel in 24 hours? What is the speed of the fast boat? How far does it travel in 24 hours? The sum of these two distances is 1920 nautical miles. Solve for k.
