Question from Andrew, a student:

Both the sum and the product of its three digits are 6. The least digit is in the hundreds place and the greatest digit is in the ones place. Write it in word form:

Hi Andrew,

The only factors of 6 are 1, 2, 3, and 6 so the three digits that make up the three digit number are

1, 1 and 6 or
1, 2 and 3.

In the first case the sum of the digits is 6 + 1 + 1 = 8 and in the second case the sum is 1 + 2 + 3 = 6. Thus the three digits must be 1, 2 and 3.

Can you complete the problem now?

Penny
