Question from jenu, a student:

The length of the rectangular field is twice its breadth. A man jogged around it 5 times and covered a distance of 3 km. what is the length of the field?

Hi Jenu,

Suppose the length is L km and the breadth is B km. Write a mathematical expression for the statement "The length is twice its breadth." The distance around the field is 2L + 2B. What is the distance the man travelled when he jogged around the field 5 times? This equation contains the variables L and B. Substitute L from the mathematical expression for "The length is twice its breadth." Solve for B.

Penny
