Question from Mary, a student:

A box full of oranges weighs 9 pounds. After a family ate 2/3 of the oranges, the remaining oranges and the box weighed 4 pounds. The weight of the box when empty is how many pounds?

Hi Mary,

The box of oranges weight 9 pounds when full and then 4 pounds when 2/3 of the oranges have been eaten. Thus 2/3 of the oranges weigh 9 - 4 = 5 pounds. How much do all the oranges weigh? How much oes the box weigh?
