Question from Rochelle, a student:

John's bedroom floor is square in shape. He used 625 tiles, with a side length of 200 mm, to tile the whole floor.
Calculate the area and dimensions of the bedroom

Hi Rochelle,

Suppose this is a much smaller room that needs only 9 tiles. In this case the floor would be 3 tiles long by 3 tiles wide.

tiles

Since each tile measures 200 mm on a side the floor is 3 × 200 = 600 mm by 600 mm. What is the area of this small room in mm2?

What are the dimensions and area of the bedroom floor that requires 625 tiles?
