Question from Sania, a student:

Felicia is thinking of two numbers. One of them is 2 more than 3 times the other one. The difference between the squares of these numbers is 112. What is the smaller number?

Hi Sania,

Suppose the first number is a and the second is b and they are both positive. Three times the second number is then 3b and 2 more than this is 3b + 2. The sentence "One of them is 2 more than 3 times the other one." then becomes

a = 3b + 2.

From this equation you can see that a is larger than b.

Transform the statement "The difference between the squares of these numbers is 112." into another equation in a and b. Substitute 3b + 2 for a in this equation and solve for b.

I hope this helps,
Penny
