Question from Skipper, a student:

I want to know the answer if you were to want a pool to be 20 ft by 30 ft and wanted a 5 ft border around it what would be the dimension of the whole area plus concrete walk

Skipper,

Draw a diagram!

pool

The entire region is a 50 foot by 40 foot rectangle with area $50 \times 40 = 2,000$ square feet.

What is the area of the surface of the pool? The difference is the area of the border.
