Question from Stephenie, a student:

converting fractions????

3 1/5 into decimal???
PLEASE HELP!

Hi Stephenie,

You have a mixed number which is three plus something less than one, one-fifth. Thus, expressed as a decimal this is $3.???,$ where the question marks are to be determined.

One way to express $\frac15$ as a decimal is to use division and divide 5 into 1. What do you get?

A second way is to fin an equivalent fraction to $\frac15$ with a denominator of $10.$ That is find $x$ is $\frac15 = \frac{x}{10}.$

I hope this helps,
Penny
