Question from taniel, a parent:

Find the number of feet of fence needed to fence a park that is 1 3/8 mi long and 5/8 wide.

Taniel,

I would first convert $1 \frac38$ to a fraction. $\frac38 = 0.375$ so $1 \frac38 = 1.375.$ There are $5280$ feet in a mile so a $1 \frac38$ mile side requires $1.375 \times 5280$ feet of fence. The other $1 \frac38$ mile side requires the same length of fencing. How much fencing does each $\frac58$ mile side require? How many feet is that in total?
