Question from Bo, a parent:

Jane guessed a number. Tom guessed a number that was double the sum of 1 more than twice the number guessed by Jane. Sum of the numbers guessed by both were 27, what are the numbers?

Hi Bo,

I don't like the way this problem is worded. I think it should say "double the sum of 1 and twice the number guessed by Jane".

Suppose the number guessed by Jane is j. Twice the number guessed by Jane is then 2j. The sum of 1 and twice the number guessed by Jane is therefore 2j + 1. Double this is 2(2j + 1). This is the number guessed by Tom. Hence

j + 2(2j + 1) = 27.

Solve for j.
