Question from eiman, a student:

Three tennis balls are placed inside a container . the tennis balls are tangent to the top, bottom, and sides of the container . find the volume of air inside the container surrounding the tennis balls if the diameter of the tennis balls is 6 inches

6 inches!??? The International Tennis Federation states that the diameter of a tennis ball must be between 2.575 and 2.700 inches (which means between 6.541 and 6.858 cm).

For your query, divide the diameter in half to get r (the radius). The volume of a SPHERE is $\large \frac43 \times \pi \times r^3;$ the volume of a CYLINDER is (area of base)$\times$(height); the area of a CIRCLE is $\pi \times r^2.$
