Question from Helen, a student:

How do you write (1/x) in exponential form?

Hi Helen,

You ned to use a negative exponent. For any non-negative integer $a$ and any integer n,

\[ a^{-n} = \frac{1}{a^n}.\]

Hence $\large \frac{1}{x} = x^{-1}.$

I hope this helps,
Penny
