Question from liz, a parent:

a bi athlete travels 20 miles in 2.25 hours. She cycles part of the way at 12 mph and runs the rest at 5 mph. How far did she run?

Hi Liz,

Suppose she runs for $x$ miles then she cycles for $20 - x$ miles. Since she runs at $5$ mph the time for the run is $\large \frac{x}{5}$ hours. How long does she cycle? The sum of these two time is 2.25 hours. Solve for $x.$
