Question from margie, a student:

A 90cm pipe is cut into two pieces so that one pieces is 6cm shorter than the other. how long was each piece?

Hi Margie,

Suppose you first cut off 6 cm and then cut the remaining piece of pipe in half. How long are the two pieces? Now glue the 6 cm piece to one of the pieces. How long is this piece?

Check your answer. Is one piece 6 cm longer than the other? Is the sum of their lengths 90 cm?
