Question from Mike, a parent:

Today is Emma's Birthday.
Emma's mother is four times as old as Emma is today.
In four years, Emma's mother will be three times as old as Emma.
How old is Emma today?

Hi Mike,

Suppose Emma is E years old today and her mother is M years old. Since Emma's mother is 4 times as ld as Emma,

\[M = 4 \times E.\]

How old will Emma be in 4 years? How old will her mother be? At that time Emma's mother will be three times as old as Emma. This gives you a second equation. Solve the equations for E and M. Check your answer.
