Question from peter, a parent:

If a golf drive travels 250 yards with a perfectly perpendicular hit, what is the length of the base, if a second golf drive is off line by one degree?

Hi Peter,

In my diagram T is the position of the tee, F is where the first drive landed and S is where the second drive landed.

triangle

M is the midpoint of FS so the triangle FTM is a right triangle and the measure of angle FTM is 0.5 degrees. What trig function relates the lengths of the sides FT and MF to the measure of the angle FTM? Use this function to find the length of MF.
