Question from Shelli, a student:

How do you find the area of a right triangle if you only know that the hypotenuse is 10 and that the base and height are unknown but are equal?

Hi Shelli,

Suppose that the length of the base is $x$ units, then the height is $x$ units. What does Pythagoras theorem tell you? Solve for $x.$ Can you find the area now?

Penny
