Question from stephanie, a student:

the length of a rectangle is 5m more than twice its width, and the area of the rectangle is 88m^2 find the dimensions of the rectangle

Hi Stephanie,

Suppose that the length of the rectangle is $L$ meters and its width is $W$ meters, then its area is $L \times W$ square meters. Thus $L \times W = 88 m^{2}.$

Now use the fact that "the length of a rectangle is 5m more than twice its width". What is twice the width? What is 5 m more than that? This is the length so substitute this for $L$ in the equation above and solve for $W.$
