Question from cyril, a student:

In a rectangle, the length is 1.5 times the breadth.if the length is shortened by 3 m and the breadth is lengthened by 3 m, the rectangle will be a square. Calculate the dimensions of the rectangle.

Hi Cyril,

Suppose the length is $L$ meters and the breadth is $B$ meters. "The length is 1.5 times the breadth." Write this as an equation. Use the fact that "if the length is shortened by 3 m and the breadth is lengthened by 3 m, the rectangle will be a square" to write another equation for $L$ and $B.$ Solve this pair of equations for $L$ and $B.$
