Question from deeshon, a student:

eric is making a smaller copy of a poster that measures 20.4 cm wide by 34.2 cm long. he reduces the original by a scale factor of 1/3. what are the dimensions of the copy

Hi Deeshon,

The scale factor relates to lengths so "He reduces the original by a scale factor of 1/3" means that the lengths of the sided are reduced by $\large \frac13$. Thus the lengths of the sides of the smaller poster will be $1 - \large \frac13 \normalsize = \large \frac23$ the lengths of the sides of the original poster.
