Question from Joanne, a student:

Ashley weighs 5kgs more than Joyce. Their total weight is 41 kgs. What is the weight of Ashley?

Hi Joanne,

(Joyce's weight) + (Ashley's weight) = 41 kgs

But Ashley weight is 5 kg more than Joyce's weight so

(Joyce's weight) + (Joyce's weight + 5 kg) = 41 kgs.

Rearranging I get

\[2 \times \mbox{ (Joyce's weight)} + 5 \mbox{ kgs} = 41 \mbox{ kgs.}\]

What is Joyce's weight?

Penny
