Question from Kenneth:

Hello:

Two people share $\$100.00$ as follows: $\$25.00$ and $\$75.00.$
The two share the $\$100.00$ in a ratio of 1 to 3.
I want to think that the two people share the $\$100.00$ in a ratio of 1 to 4.
Can you explain why 1 to 3 is correct and 1 to 4 is not?

I thank you for your reply.

Hi Kenneth,

The two shares are $\$25.00$ and $\$75.00$ and $75$ is $3$ times $25$ so the two shares are in the ratio of 1 to 3. I think you are looking at the first share, $\$25.00$ and the total of the two shares, $\$100.00$ to get 1 to 4.

I hope this helps,
Penny
