Question from Kevin:

Hello,

I need to make a schedule for a golf league consisting of 14 two man teams playing over the course of 20 weeks. I understand that each team will play at least once and I believe 7 teams will play each other twice over the course of the season. How would I generate this schedule. Thank you,

Kevin,

Number the teams 0 through 12 and infinity.

Week 1: 0, 11; 1, 10; 2, 9; 3, 8; 4, 7; 5, 6; 12, infinity
Week 2: 1, 12; 2, 11; 3, 10; 4, 9; 5, 8; 6, 7; 0, infinity

To get each next week, “add" one to each team number, using infinity + 1 = infinity, and 12 + 1 = 0 (like an odometer, the number that comes up after passing 12 is 0).

This will give the schedule you want. Once you have it, you can rearrange the weeks any way you like.
