Question from Lynn, a parent:

There is a model of the sun that is 2 1/2 inches in diameter. This is the only clue we have! How far away is the earth from this model?

Hi Lynn,

I typed distance from the Earth to the sun into Google and got the response 149,600,000 km. I then typed in diameter of the sun and got 1,391,684 km. Thus the distance from the Earth to the sun is

\[\frac{149,600,000}{1,391,684} = 107.5 \mbox{ times the diameter of the sun.}\]

In your model the diameter of the sun is 2 1/2 inches. What is the distance from the Earth to the sun in your model?

Penny
