Question from Monica, a student:

You have 15 more dimes than nickels. If you have $2.55, how many nickels do you have?

Hi Monica,

Suppose the number of nickels you have is $n$ and the number of dimes is $d.$ Each nickel is worth 5¢ and each dime is worth 10¢ and hence $5n + 10d = 255.$ Write a second equation that contains the information that you have 15 more dimes than nickles. Solve the two equations foe $n$ and $d.$
