Question from Robin, a parent:

The school is reducing the area of its 20yd by 50yd parking lot by removing a strip at one end of the parking lot and another strip of the same width from one side. The new area of the parking lot is 504 square yards. Find the width of the removed strip

Hi Robin,

Draw a diagram! In my diagram the width of the two strips is $w$ yards each. I planted grass in these two strips.

parkig lot

The remaining parking lot is $20 - w$ yards by $50 - w$ yards and its area is $504$ square yards. Solve for $w.$
