Question from steven, a student:

Bargain Furniture sells a five-piece country maple bedroom set for $\$1299.$ The cost of this set is $\$700.$ What are the markup on the bedroom set?

Hi Steven,

The price of the bedroom set is the sum of two parts, the cost which is $\$700$ and the markup. Thus the markup is $\$1299 - \$700 = \$599.$ The markup is usually expressed as a percentage of the cost so what percent is $\$599$ of $\$700?$
