Question from Audrey:

A Harley Davidson motor cycle weighing 650 lbs with a rider weighing 175 bs
was going 40 miles per hour. He had to make a sudden stop. Slammed on brakes. How long a distance for him to stop?

Hi Audrey,

This is not as easy as it might seem. A big factor is the coefficient of friction between the wheels and the road. Go to the Math Beyond School section of Math Central, browse by title and look for the article titled Accident Reconstruction.
