Question from Deirdre, a student:

Hi,
I got 69% on a question worth 20%
68% on a question worth 20%

And the final exam was worth 60%

My final grade overall was 63%

Did I do very bad in the exam????

Hi Deirdre,

Suppose your final exam grade was S%. Your final grade is composed of 3 parts, 20% from the first question, 20% from the second question and 60% from the final exam score.

20% of 69% is

\[0.20 \times 69\%\]

20% of 68% is

\[0.20 \times 68\%.\]

and 60% of S% is

\[0.6 \times S\%.\]

Your final grade was 63% and hence

\[0.20 \times 69\% + 0.20 \times 68\% + 0.6 \times S\% = 63\%.\]

Solve for S.

Penny
