Question from jill, a student:

A has co- ordinates (7,-1) and B has co-ordinates (3,5).write these as column vectors

Hi Jill,

Vectors are sometimes written as rows and sometimes as columns. You have written two vectors as rows. To write them as column vectors place the numbers, one above the other, and surround the column of numbers with parentheses. Thus $(7, -1)$ written as a column vector is

\[\left( \begin{array}{r}7\\-1\end{array} \right). \]
