Question from Michael, a student:

Jeffrey drove to a town 25 miles away at an average speed of 50 miles per hour. The return trip along the same route took 20 minutes longer than the trip to town. Determine the average speed in miles per hour for Jeffrey's round trip.

Hi Michael,

Use the fact that average rate is distance divided by time to find the time it took for Jeffrey to drive to town. How long in hours was the return trip? Now you know the total time for the return trip find the average rate using again the fact that average rate is distance divided by time.
